Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort

Outrigger Konotta, set in the unspoiled Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, offers luxurious accommodation, superb restaurants and friendly staff in verdant surroundings. Even entry-level villas are enormous and have their own private pools, while outside your room, there’s fantastic diving, an impressive spa and a great kids’ club.

Outrigger Konotta enjoys a remote location in the uncrowded Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, less than 31 miles north of the Equator. Unlike many other Maldives resorts, where there are many other hotels nearby, and diving boats can often be seen sailing by, this resort feels totally undisturbed. The resort is reached via an hour’s domestic flight from Malé to Kaadedhdhoo Airport, followed by a half-hour yacht transfer.

Style & character

Modern and fresh while retaining Maldivian traditions. The resort marries elegant, simple design lines with thatched roofs and open spaces. The villas are well spaced out to lend a sense of privacy, while the rich vegetation, pale sands and sparkling waters make exploring the island a real pleasure.

Service & facilities

The staff could not be friendlier, cooking up special meals to suit any dietary requirement, allergy or whim, appearing with powerful fresh coconut juices to revive you after an early morning yoga class, and going out of their way to make sure you’re having the best possible stay. Guest Service Agents are responsible for a maximum of five villas each, and are the main point of contact, booking activities and dinners, preparing thoughtful surprises in villas and personalising your stay.

Facilities are also fantastic: at the spa, there are five treatment rooms in which to enjoy massages, as well as a hydrotherapy pool, steam bath, sizeable 24-hour gym and complimentary yoga lessons. Also notable is the dive centre: whether you’re a first-timer or have completed a PADI course, the instructors are patient with nervous divers and knowledgeable about the underwater world. It’s practically guaranteed you’ll see an exciting array of colourful marine creatures, from turtles to zebra sharks, whether you’re diving, snorkelling or glass-bottom kayaking around the house reef, or further out at manta ray- and whale shark-sighting areas.

Unlike in many Maldives resorts, where you’ll pay a premium for a room with its own pool, the entry-level beach villas at Outrigger Konotta are incredibly spacious and not only come with their own large pools, but have two-storey exterior terraces with sun loungers, hot tubs, outdoor rain showers and direct access to the sea. Interiors are understated, contemporary and elegant, with dark wood detailing, large windows, walk-through wardrobes, cosy beds overlooking the sea and separate living areas. The bathrooms are also sizeable, with standalone tubs, separate showers and dressing tables.

Food & drink

There are a number of restaurants serving several different cuisines. Blue Salt offers all-day dining: for breakfast, you can choose juice, fruit, cheese, cereal and pastries from the buffet, or order from the menu, with options including European classics such as Belgian waffles or English breakfast, as well as Japanese options, Chinese-style dumplings and Maldivian dishes. Lunch and dinner can also be eaten here, and while there’s plenty of different cuisines to pick from on several different menus, the waiters are truly accommodating and can mix and match ingredients to suit your requirements.

There’s also Driftwood, where you can enjoy themed dinners, and Nala Rah, in which at one end you can enjoy a teppanyaki spectacle, and at the other you can eat delicious sushi freshly prepared in front of you.
