Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – There no conventional electricity at Annapara Home Stay. The requirement of energy is entirely need based. A small domestic generator (350watts) churns out power in the evenings from 6.30 to 10.30pm for utility and entertainment. There is also a home-brewed wind mill to charge batteries used for recharging mobile phones, camera batteries and laptop computers. All the light bulbs are low energy consuming CFLs. Since the requirement and the resource is limited, there is no need for training and awareness. Water is heated for domestic consumption by means of a waste wood boiler fired by branches and dead trees collected from the woods nearby. The climate year-round is such that no heating nor air-conditioning is required.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – Water is sourced from a natural spring at a higher altitude and is transported through gravity. Water for drinking is purified by boiling and filtering. No dangerous chemicals are present in the detergents and soaps used. Sheets & Towels are normally changed once in 3 days. Waste water is channelled into a septic tank from where the water diffuses back into the soil. Since the natural terrain & vegetation is retained with minimal landscaping, the rain water is directly harvested and absorbed into the ground without soil erosion. Excess water, over and above what is used for domestic consumption is used for gardening around the property.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – Glass & Metal waste is disposed off appropriately to the recyclers. A conscious effort is made to refill the plastic water bottles brought by guests and given back to them to use for their return/onward journey. The organic waste from the Kitchen and other sources is composted in a composting pit (a practice widely promoted by the local village administrative body). In-organic waste is dumped in an area designated by the local village administrative body. Food and beverage is served in bone china and glassware. The use of “use & throw” plasticware / paperware in packaging is negligible.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – Eco-friendly practices are naturally adopted as a way of life. Used and worn out linen are donated to charity. The feasibility of hand cranked torch lights and lanterns is being explored. Efficiency of LED bulbs (very low power consuming) vs CFL bulbs is also being evaluated. Guests are not allowed to litter the surroundings and are educated about the risk of causing forest fires during nature walks, treks and camp-outs. Rappelling and Zipline adventure activities are conducted by qualified personnel using the required safety gear. Guests are advised ways in which they can enjoy the serene and tranquil settings at Annapara Home Stay while leaving behind the lowest possible carbon footprint.
